DUTCH FORT @ KALPAKKAM
An old fort which is being preserved by the government as one of the historical place.
Sadras (Saduranga pattinam) is an old Dutch fort that is located just past Mahabalipuram, near the Kalpakkam atomic power plant.
It is next to the beach and is a nice place to have a small picnic with children. The fort is not large (only about 100m wide and 100m long) and has only a couple of small rooms inside it. It has thick walls though. At the gate, there are couple of old cannons and inside the fort is an interesting Dutch cemetery and a gallows.
There is a granary building on the far right corner of the fort. You can climb to the roof of the granary and have a small picnic while seeing the waves crash on the beach. Children can learn about history and old forts also. The place is reasonably well maintained and is not crowded at all. If the gate is locked, just cal out and the caretaker will open the gate for you.
How to get there?
Drive on the East Coast Road. Go past Mahabalipuram and then just as you see Kalpakkam power plant (which is far to your left), there is a left turn to go towards Kalpakkam township. Follow that road for a couple of miles and it will lead you straight to the fort. You will go past the Kalpakkam atomic plant.
It is at most 5 to 10 minutes, after you cross Mahabalipuram. So it is an easy drive from Chennai and will not take more than a few hours.
What do take and do?
- Picnic basket. There are no restaurants around.
- Camera
- A book or two to read to the children when you are there. Maybe something on Tipu Sultan or some such historical reference where forts are mentioned.
- Wear shoes so you can climb and walk around easily

A place to have family and friends hangout. This place has beautiful sceneries and has a separate island where u can plan for parties etc. Boating is one of the high lightened fun at this place.
Mudaliarkuppam is a popular place of interest that attracts myriads of tourists from all parts of the country. Mudaliarkuppam is located in the district of Kanchipuram, 92 km from Chennai and 36 km down Mamallapuram on ECR (East Coast Road). Mudaliarkuppam is an incredible tourist destination. Tourism industry in the idyllic place is growing by leaps and bounds. Visitors and tourists visit this place alike, to while away their time on the choicest array of rowboats, pedal boats and motorboats. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation undertakes and preserves this unusual boating house.
In fact, Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation came up with new ideas and policies to make it even more attractive. Recently, they have launched a special boat riding facility at its Raindrop Boat House in Mudaliarkuppam. It is called kayak, the one-seater boat. At present there are fifty-four varieties of boats. The purchases include two-seaters pedalling boats, speedboats, motorboats and one-seater pedal boats. Special boat races are organised every year. College and university students participate here in great enthusiasm and unison. There is an island approximately 4 km from the Raindro Boat House, in the expanse of the waters in Mudaliarkuppam.
Tourists are allowed to spend some time in the island and tents are available for this purpose. Unfortunately, there is no decent place to have one`s food in Mudaliarkuppam. The best-available solution is to carry food from Chennai or any other decent place along the way. In order to enjoy the famed boating bonanza, tourists need to pay a specific amount of money, depending on the type of boat and duration of time. At present, it is recorded that Mudaliarkuppam attracts an approximate decent crowd of one thousand and five hundred tourists on Sundays and other holidays. Also eight hundred to one thousand tourists attract tourists on Saturdays.

This is also one of the exotic place to be visited. this fort is totally damaged. This place is around 10 km from Mudaliarkuppam.
Alamparai fort is one of the least known historic places found on the southern outskirts of Chennai. It is around 100kms away from Chennai through ECR Road and is very near to Pondicherry. The Fort is believed to be constructed by Muslim rulers around 18th century and what we see now is the broken remains of the Fort. This place is very picturesque since it is on the shores of Bay of Bengal and has scenic backwaters. With a neat sandy beach and backwater the broken Fort is treat to our eyes and is a perfect place for a weekend outing. If you are a photographer, you will love this place since the landscape is very unique with sandy beach, backwater and a Fort closer to each other. MUTTUKADU BOAT HOUSE, ECR , CHENNAI
Muttukadu, located at a distance of 36 km from Chennai, is a small town which serves as the most preferred picnic spot along with backwaters and water activities. Muttukadu is adorned with greenery, including coconut trees and lush grassland to provide ample shade and to give relaxation to the visitors, making the environment pollution free and breezy. Helped by the fact that the backwaters and the facility of boat house have been developed by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation for the visitors to stay and enjoy, the place is visited by hordes every year who come here to enjoy their holidays.
The main attraction of this place is windsurfing regatta which is organized every year in the month of February, plus many other water games such as kayaking, boating, canoeing, etc are organized here. Those who are adventurous and fun loving, they can also join the training programs which are held in Muttukadu. No wonder it is visited by thrill seekers as well as peace lovers form India and abroad. Prawns and Jellyfishes are well-known in this place and due to these reasons, it is also known as 'the land of flora and fauna'. It is just the perfect destination for spending holidays with beguilingly exquisite backwaters, peaceful surroundings and a charismatic blend of greenery and gleaming blue.
There are other places of attraction include Dakshinchitra, a small handicraft village nearby Muttukadu, structured in the traditional architectural style of 19th century and prominent for its ceramics, glass items and sculptures. It is spread over an area of 10 acres, looking across the Bay of Bengal, sited at a distance of 30 km, south of the capital city. In addition to this, it is a centre for the living culture of arts and crafts, performing arts and architecture of India with prominence on the mores of South India.
This site was opened for the people in 1996 and the project runs under the administration of the Madras Craft Foundation, a non-profit organization. On the way to Mahabalipuram, there is an amusement park, known as the MGM DIZZEE World which has many recreational facilities including Karnakasi Ranger, Dashing Boat, Arrow Loop Roller Coaster, water sports and 110 ft. Dizee Shake. Surely, it is one of the best excursion locales for the visitors coming from other parts of India as well as abroad. If in Chennai, do not miss the chance to pay a visit to this place.

Thalankuppam is a small fishing hamlet, at Ennore, the extreme north of Chennai city. The Thalankuppam River, also called as the Kourtaliayaar, Mogathwaram, meets the sea this place. Around 200 years ago, this is the place the British would come to, sailing 17 kilo meters from Fort St. George and buy their lord’s favorite here. Even today, people flock in the early hours to buy loads of fresh fish. It has also won its place for climax shots in a few movies.
